CONSTITUTION

OF

UTAH ASSOCIATION OF MATHEMATICS TEACHER EDUCATORS

 

 

 

 

ARTICLE I

 

NAME AND AFFILIATION

 

Section 1

 

The name of this organization shall be the gUTAH ASSOCIATION OF MATHEMATICS TEACHER EDUCATORS.h

 

 

ARTICLE II

 

PURPOSE

 

Section 1

 

The purpose of this organization shall be:

·      promote the improvement of mathematics teacher education in the state of Utah.

·      promote leadership among mathematics teacher educators in the broad mathematics education community.

·      serve as a clearing house for ideas and resources in teacher education in mathematics.

·      disseminate  information about mathematics education issues in the state of Utah.

·      encourage research related to mathematics teacher education, especially research which identifies factors that contribute to improving the preparation and professional development of mathematics teachers at all levels.

·      encourage and support programs for prospective teachers at all grade levels, especially for members of traditionally underrepresented populations.

·      facilitate communication among mathematics teacher educators at the elementary, secondary, community college, college, and university levels.

·      coordinate activities and work collaboratively with other associations and organizations concerned with the preparation and professional development of mathematics teachers (such as UCTM and the state office of education).

·      facilitate collaboration among mathematics teacher educators who are faculty members at different universities or from different educational administrative units, such as departments of mathematics, departments of education and school districts.

·      create an awareness and knowledge of different preservice mathematics teacher education programs and/or professional development activities in the state of Utah.

·      encourage and organize programs and meetings focusing on issues related to the preparation and professional development of mathematics teachers.

·      work cooperatively with state and national certification and testing agencies to enhance the mathematical, pedagogical, and clinical preparation of prospective teachers of mathematics at all levels (kindergarten through grade sixteen) with respect to criteria for credentialing and licensing of teachers.

·      foster the incorporation of appropriate technology into teacher education programs in mathematics at all levels.

 

 

ARTICLE III

 

MEMBERSHIP AND DUES

 

Section 1

 

All those who are interested in the teaching of mathematics, the professional development of mathematics teachers or the preparation of prospective mathematics teachers shall be eligible to regular membership. These individuals include, but are not limited to, district mathematics specialists from school districts across the state and the faculty at the following institutions of higher education in the State of Utah: Utah State University, Weber State University, University of Utah, Salt Lake Community College, Westminster College, Utah Valley State College, Brigham Young University, Snow College, College of Eastern Utah, Southern Utah University, and Dixie College.

 

Section 2

 

The Executive Committee may establish various types of membership in the organization, and establish a schedule of dues. All dues-paying members shall be eligible to vote.

 

Section 3

 

Membership shall provide the Secretary with a email and mailing address. A member shall be considered to have adequate notice of elections, meetings and other business of the organization if the appropriate information is mailed to one of these addresses (email or regular mail) 14 days before the business is to be acted upon.

 

 

 

 

ARTICLE IV

 

OFFICERS

 

Section 1

 

The organization will be governed by an Executive committee. The Executive committee will consist of a President, President-elect, and secretary.

 

Section 2

 

The board will be composed of a representative from each participating institution of higher education in the State of Utah and one representative from the group of district mathematics specialists. The board will be appointed by the President.

 

Section 3

 

The President-Elect shall be elected during the annual conference each February/March. When a new President-Elect is selected, the previous yearfs President-Elect shall become the President of the organization. A Secretary will be elected every other year and serve for two years.

 

Section 4

 

The responsibilities of the President-Elect are, but are not limited to, organizing the conference for the following year.

The Presidentfs responsibilities are, but are not limited to, the following: remain informed of current mathematics issues in the state; function as a liaison between UAMTE and UCTM and the State Office of Education; disseminate this information to the remainder of the UAMTE membership; organize the elections at the next conference.

The Secretaryfs responsibilities are, but are not limited to, keeping a record of executive committee meetings and any board meetings. He/she will also be responsible for maintaining the membership for the organization.

 

ARTICLE V

 

MEMBERSHIP MEETINGS

 

Section 1

 

There shall be at least one membership meeting during the academic year, and such other meetings as the Executive Committee shall decide.

 

Section 2

 

An organization financial report shall be reviewed and approved by the membership at each membership meeting.

 

ARTICLE VI

 

AMENDMENTS

 

Section 1

 

An amendment to the Constitution may be proposed (a) by a majority of the members of the Executive Committee and Board or (b) by a majority of the members at a regular meeting.

 

Section 2

 

An amendment which has been proposed shall become effective when ratified by two-thirds of those responding in a general membership vote. A general membership vote can either be conducted by mail (email or regular mail) and the two-thirds would be of those who respond to the vote or at a general membership meeting and the two-thirds would be of those present at the meeting.

 

 

ARTICLE VII

 

DISOLUTION CLAUSE

 

Section 1

 

If at any time the UTAH ASSOCIATION OF MATHEMATICS TEACHER EDUCATORS ceases to function, all assets and property held by the association, shall after the payment of its liabilities, be paid over to an organization selected by the final Executive Committee. This selected organization shall have a similar purpose as the UTAH ASSOCIATION OF MATHEMATICS TEACHER EDUCATORS.

 

Section 2

 

The decision to dissolve shall be initiated by a two-thirds vote of the Executive Committee and Board. The voting membership of the UTAH ASSOCIATION OF MATHEMATICS TEACHER EDUCATORS would then be polled by mail, two-thirds of the ballots returned favor dissolution, the organization would then be dissolved.
