MATH 113H
Sections 200 and 201
Fall 2002
Classroom: 116 TMCB.
Class Time: Section 200 meets daily at 8:00-8:50 a.m. Section 201 meets daily at 1:00-1:50 p.m.
Instructor: Chris Grant, 283 TMCB, 422–4105, grant@math.byu.edu. The address for the website for this class is:
http://www.math.byu.edu/~grant/courses/m113/f02/index.html
Office Hours: Tentatively 9:00–9:50 a.m. MWF, and 10:00–10:50 a.m. MWF. Other times by appointment. (Or by simply dropping in. I am typically on campus each weekday from around 7 a.m. to around 6 p.m., and I probably spend most of that time in my office. On snowy days, I'm usually on campus from around 6 a.m. to around 3:30 p.m.)
Text: Salas and Hille's Calculus: One and Several Variables, revised by Garret J. Etgen, 8th edition. We will cover most of chapters 6, 8, 9, 10, and 11 as well as some additional material from other sources. You are expected to read the text, not just scan it for examples similar to the homework.

The big mathematical questions we're going to address this semester are:

  • Besides calculating area, what, if anything, else are integrals good for?
  • How can I compute integrals when simple substitution doesn't work?
  • What geometric ideas are useful in applications of calculus?
  • How can calculus be used to get arbitrarily good polynomial approximations to complicated functions?
Placement Test:

You are required to take a placement test at the start of the semester to see if you are adequately prepared to take this class. This test will be available in the Testing Center during the first two weeks of class. Your score on this test will not affect your grade in this class (but if you fail to take the test then you will not be allowed to pass the class). For more information, click here.

Homework:

Homework is due once a week on Fridays at 3 p.m. sharp. It can be turned in at my office or—on the Fridays when class is held— it can be turned in in class. A list of the homework problems and their due dates can be found at: http://www.math.byu.edu/~grant/courses/m113/f02/hwork.html. Homework that is turned in late, but less than one week late, will be eligible for 50% credit. Homework that is turned in one to two weeks late will be eligible for 25% credit. Homework that is turned in two to three weeks late will be eligible for 12.5% credit, etc. In case of an emergency (such as serious illness) or absence because of official university business, deadlines may be extended by mutual agreement with the instructor. Extensions should be negotiated with the instructor as early as possible. In particular, extensions for foreseeable absences must be negotiated before the absences occur. Indeterminate extensions will not be given. Under no circumstances will homework be accepted (for any credit) after midnight, December 12.

You are allowed (and encouraged) to get together with classmates to discuss homework problems, but you should not copy someone else's answers nor should you let someone else copy your answers. If you have any questions at all about the difference between permissible collaboration and impermissible copying, consult BYU's Academic Honesty Policy or ask your instructor.

Quizzes: Short quizzes will be given almost every Thursday at the end of class. Calculators, computers, books, or notes may not be consulted during the quiz. Missed quizzes may be made up only in case of an emergency (such as serious illness) or absence because of official university business.
Midterm Exams: There will be 5 untimed midterm exams, each of which will be given in the Testing Center. The dates that these will be available are indicated on the class schedule. On the Friday of each exam, class will not be held. Calculators, computers, books, or notes will not be permitted. On each exam, you will be asked to sign a statement promising that you have received no information about the content of the exam from others, and that you will not provide any information about the content of the exam to others until the end of the testing period.
Final Exam: The final exam will be in the classroom. For Section 200, the final exam will be on Friday, December 20, from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. For Section 201, the final exam will be on Thursday, December 19, from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Calculators, computers, books, or notes are not allowed on the final. The final will be comprehensive and will be written by a committee, not by the instructor.
Grading: There will be 1045 points possible for the course:

Source Points Breakdown
Homework 180 12 weekly sets, 15 points each
Quizzes 65 13 quizzes, 5 points each
Midterm Exams 500 5 exams, 100 points each
Citizenship Points 50
Final Exam 250
Total 1045

The letter grade corresponding to a given number of points will depend on the performance of this section on the final exam. In an effort to maintain some consistency in the level of grading from section to section in Math 113 and 113H, the math department will prescribe to the instructor what the average course grade in a given section will be based on the performance of the students in that section on the final exam. In a section that does above average on the final, the combined G.P.A. of the students in that section will be higher than the combined G.P.A. of all Math 113 and 113H students. In a section that does below average on the final, the combined G.P.A. of the students in that section will be lower than the combined G.P.A. of all Math 113 and 113H students. Over the last several semesters, the department has prescribed a combined G.P.A. of all Math 113 and 113H students around 2.7.
Studying: The BYU Catalog states: "The expectation for undergraduate courses is three hours of work per week per credit hour for the average student who is appropriately prepared; much more time may be required to achieve excellence." You should plan your study time for this course accordingly. (By some interpretations, President Bateman has endorsed a higher standard.)
Technology: Calculators are not required for this course, and they (along with computers) may not be used on quizzes and exams. Feel free to use them when doing your homework, if you wish, but don't become so dependent on them that it damages your performance on quizzes and exams.
Getting Help: If you are having trouble understanding the material, please ask questions in class. Almost all of the time on Thursdays will be devoted to discussing your questions (but you can ask questions on other days as well). Also, please feel free to come see me in my office. The Math Lab provides tutorial service on a walk-in basis. It is currently located in 60 KMB but is relocating to 151 TMCB on November 1. Tutoring Services may also be able to help you.
Honor Code: All students are expected to adhere to the honor code and dress and grooming standards.
Disabilities: All students needing special accommodations because of disabilities should notify the instructor during the first week of school. All such accommodations will be coordinated through the University Accessibility Center. See http://ucs.byu.edu/gened/honors/Faculty/EEOStatement.html for a related legal statement, along with a statement on sexual harassment.
