Office Hours: Tentatively 8:00–8:50 a.m. MWF, and 9:00–9:50 a.m. MWF. Other times by appointment. (Or by simply dropping in. I am typically on campus from around 7 a.m. to around 6 p.m., and I probably spend most of that time in my office. On snowy days, I'm usually on campus from around 6 a.m. to around 3:30 p.m.)
Text: Lebesgue Integration on Euclidean Space, by Frank Jones, revised edition. We will start with Chapter 11 this semester, and cover as much of the book as we can. You can choose to read the text before or after the corresponding lecture, but, one way or the other, you're expected to read the text.
Homework:

With a few exceptions, homework assigned on a Monday is due on the Friday of the same week, and homework assigned on a Wednesday or Friday is due on the Friday of the following week. The exceptions have to do with the Olympic break and the end of the semester. Homework assigned on February 13 or 15 is due on Friday, March 1, and homework assigned on April 10, 12, or 15 is due on Thursday, April 18. (Homework assigned on Thursday, January 24, is due on February 1.)

Homework is due at 12 p.m. sharp. It can be brought by my office, put in my mailslot in 295 TMCB, or placed on the desk in the front of the classroom at the start of class. (If you'll not be able to be present at the start of class, you'll need to turn your homework in early.) You are responsible for knowing when homework is due and for taking the initiative in turning it in. I will not take class time to remind you to turn homework in. Homework that is turned in late, but less than one week late, will be eligible for 50% credit. Homework that is turned in one to two weeks late will be eligible for 25% credit. Homework that is turned in two to three weeks late will be eligible for 12.5% credit, etc. In case of an emergency (such as serious illness) or absence because of official university business, deadlines may be extended by mutual agreement with the instructor. Extensions should be negotiated with the instructor as early as possible. In particular, extensions for foreseeable absences must be negotiated before the absences occur. Indeterminate extensions will not be given. Under no circumstances will homework be accepted (for any credit) after midnight, April 18.

As you have probably learned by now, homework problems in advanced math classes typically demand solutions involving complete, clear, well-organized, arguments that are gramatically and logically correct. The problems in this class will be no exception. Please do not turn in your scratch work.

The BYU Academic Honesty Policy states that cheating "include[s]:

  1. Copying from another person's work during an examination or while completing an assignment.
  2. Allowing someone to copy from you during an examination or while completing an assignment.
  3. Using unauthorized materials during an examination or while completing an assignment.
  4. Collaborating on an examination or assignment without authorization.
  5. Taking an examination or completing an assignment for another or permitting another to take an examination or to complete an assignment for you."
In this class, you are not authorized to collaborate on homework assignments, and you are not authorized to use the Internet or a tutor to obtain homework solutions. You are authorized to come get hints from the instructor if you're stuck. If you have any questions at all about academic honesty as it pertains to this class, ask your instructor.
Midterm Exam: There will be one untimed midterm exam. It will be available in the Testing Center on February 28 and March 1. Class will not be held on March 1. You will not be permitted to use calculators, computers, books, or notes on the exam. You will be asked to sign a statement promising that you have received no information about the content of the exam from others, and that you will not provide any information about the content of the exam to others until the exams have been graded and returned to you.
Final Exam: The final exam is scheduled for Saturday, April 20, 2002, from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. in our classroom.
Grading: Each exam is worth 100 points, and the homework is worth a total of 200 points. The percentages of points necessary to get an A(–), B(–), C(–), etc., are yet to be determined but will, respectively, not rise above 90, 80, 70, etc. Over the last 5 years, the section G.P.A. for Math 542 has varied from about 2.8 to about 3.9. I would expect the section G.P.A. this semester to fall somewhere in that range, with the exact location depending on the performance of the class.
Studying: The BYU Catalog states: "The expectation for undergraduate courses is three hours of work per week per credit hour for the average student who is appropriately prepared; much more time may be required to achieve excellence." You should plan your study time for this course accordingly.
Getting Help: If you are having trouble understanding the material, please ask questions in class. Also, please feel free to come see me in my office.
