Math 290

Fall 2019

Section 4: 136 TMCB 12:00-12:50 PM MWF

Instructor: Darrin Doud
Office: 322 TMCB
Office Hours: TBA or by appointment

Course Description

Math 290 is an introduction to mathematical thinking. The emphasis in this course is on reasoning mathematically. We will learn many different proof techniques, as well as how to write mathematics. By the end of the course, students should be able to read, understand and write mathematical proofs. Because writing is an important part of the course, we will learn to use the LaTeX typesetting system. LaTeX is free software, which is used by professional mathematicians to type mathematics. During the course, there will be four short writing assignments, which you will need to type using LaTeX. Instructions on the use of LaTeX will be given during the semester.

Exams

We will have three midterm exams in the testing center, given on the following schedule:
  • Exam 1: Oct. 2-4, 2019
  • Exam 2: Oct. 30-Nov. 2, 2019
  • Exam 3: Nov. 21-Nov 23, 2019
The final exam will be in the testing center, and may be taken anytime during finals week.

Course Documents

Download the Syllabus.

The textbook is freely downloadable. The cheapest way to get a printed copy is to purchase it from http://www.lulu.com/shop/darrin-doud-and-pace-p-nielsen/a-transition-to-advanced-mathematics/paperback/product-24141964.html. Note that a more expensive copy (in color) is available at http://www.lulu.com/shop/darrin-doud-and-pace-p-nielsen/a-transition-to-advanced-mathematics/paperback/product-24141959.html.

You can also download a version of the text with minimal margins, that is suitable for use on a tablet, phone, or e-reader.

Turning in homework electronically

I have created a gmail account for the class to turn in homework. The e-mail address is Math290@gmail.com. When you send your homework, send both a TeX file and a PDF file. Note that homework is normally due at 5:00 PM on the due date, but for homework typed using LaTeX and turned in electronically, the due date is extended to midnight.

Create an account at https://overleaf.com in order to type homework, or complete writing assignments using LaTeX.

A tutorial on using LaTeX is also available for download.
